A quick guide to the main beer styles:

Lager: Fermented and conditioned slowly at low temperatures, it often settles to the bottom of the vessel in a process known as “bottom fermenting”. The result is a full bodied, mellow beer that is crisp and refreshing with far less fruit flavours than ale.

Ale: This style of beer producion has been in production for 1000’s of years. Fermented at warmer temperatures of between 21-70ºc using “top fermenting” yeasts and a short maturation period. Robust, aromatic and fruity in style.

Blonde Ale: Typically fermented and aged at ale temperatures, and sometimes filtered or cold stored for a period to enhance clarity. Fresh and crisp with medium-light bitterness and some sweet malty nuances.

IPA: IPAs vary greatly but are most often still hoppy with some citrus fruit undertones. Legend says the name “Indian Pale Ale” takes its roots from British Colonial times, where it denoted a style of beer made from pale malt. They were very hoppy with lots of natural preservatives and could withstand long voyages, such as those to India.

Red Ale: A bit sweet, with a lightly hopped tea-like flavour, and viscous body. Irish Red Ales are easy to please. Look for well-rounded and balanced flavours, and a pleasant toasted malt character in many examples. A drying finish is common.

Pilsener: The Czech Pilsner, or sometimes known as the Bohemian Pilsner, is light straw to golden colour and no sediment. Many believe the city of Pils to be where the first Larger was discovered.

Porter: Made with dark malted barley, a good amount of hops, and top-fermenting ale yeasts. The end result is usually a dark medium-bodied beer with a nice balance of malty sweetness and bitter hoppiness.

Stout: Stout is a dark beer made using roasted malt or roasted barley, hops, water and yeast. Stouts were traditionally the generic term for the strongest or ‘stoutest’ porters.
